Only Rituals Can Save Us is an audiovisual essay that sits at the intersection of autobiography, decolonial historiography, and dance. In 1947, the Ukrainian experimental filmmaker Maya Deren travelled to Haiti to film voodoo rites and rituals. This essay speculates on that unfinished film.

Artist Biography

Juliana Erazo is a Colombian filmmaker based in The Netherlands, graduated from the Animation MA in St. Joost. She focuses on the interaction of animated documentary and visual metaphors, with her work she brings together the visual richness inspired in latin culture along with her experiences as a female and a migrant.

She participates actively as a speaker and lecturer on topics like inclusivity, animated documentary and female representation among others. She contributes to the animation community also as part of the Women in Animation Colombia association as well as her former coordinator role for La Truca International Animation Festival in Cali, Colombia. In 2020 she was selected for the Next Talent Program founded by Noord Brabant and coordinated by Playgrounds, which allowed her to develop her next steps in her career in the Netherlands.
