Only Rituals Can Save Us is an audiovisual essay that sits at the intersection of autobiography, decolonial historiography, and dance. In 1947, the Ukrainian experimental filmmaker Maya Deren travelled to Haiti to film voodoo rites and rituals. This essay speculates on that unfinished film.

Artist Biography

Julia Martos (1989) is a visual artist from the south of Spain. Her experience investigating the politics of the archive and of its exhibition, both within the gallery context and on the big screen, has led her to question how autobiography should be experienced in contemporary artistic practices, whether as a genre/methodology or as a way of reading, a way of looking.
